2020 WNBA Championships- What is Expected of the Event?

The WNBA 2020 championship will be taking place for the 24th season since it was founded back in 1996. Several planned changes are to be made in the league, which include increasing the number of games from 34 to 36 for each team for a regular season, broadcasting more games on ABC and ESPN, and introducing a mid-season commissioner cup tournament.

The season was postponed indefinitely on April 3 due to the coronavirus outbreak. This season is the first season under the new collective Bargaining Agreement between the WNBA player’s association and the league. The league resumed on July 25, where the games were shortened to 22 games on the regular season and with fans in the arenas.

WNBA Top Teams

With the current defending champions, the Washington Mystics, the ninth team to win the WNBA championship, there have been some dominating teams in the WNBA league. In the tournament, Houston Comets, Seattle storm, Minnesota Lynx, LA sparks, Phoenix mercury, to Detroit Shock are the only teams to win the championship more than three times. Washington Mystics, Indiana Fever, and Sacramento Monarchs have only won the tournament once. Nearly all the teams have won the runner up and MVP, so no team is dominating like in the champions.

Seattle Storm is the leading in the table with ten wins and one loss. Handpicking the best team basing on the number on the current season and taking previous statistics, Seattle Storm, LA sparks, and Minnesota lynx are the best teams in the WNBA league. The defending champions sit at position 8 with three wins and seven losses.

The league has promising young talents in the likes of Breanna Stewart, who plays for Seattle storm, and we expect her to return where she missed last season because of torn Achilles. She is about to win her second MVP this season and has won the WNBA championship in 2018. She was the rookie of the year in 2016. The other players who are close matching her statistics include; A’ja Wilson playing for Las Vegas Aces, Diamond DeShields (Chicago Sky), Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), and Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings) close the top 5 players in the 2020 WNBA league season.

WNBA playoffs

the WNBA playoffs is an elimination tournament that is contested by eight teams who battles to decide which two teams will play in the WNBA finals. The current top 8 teams in the table will participate in the playoffs regardless of their conference affiliation. The format will be the same as the previous seasons, where the top two seeds receive double byes to WNBA semifinals. Teams in positions 4 and 5 will receive a single bye, and seed no.8 will play seed no.5, seed no.7 to play seed no.6 in a single game elimination. The same goes for the second round, and the semifinals and finals are always a series of best of 5. The best team takes the championship cup.
